Basement Update - calling it done for Christmas!

After more time on my knees in this basement than I like to think about, I've gotten pretty close to finishing the main area with the bar, fireplace, and record player.  The aluminum tree is up and spinning, I've got a fire going, and I'm listening to vintage Christmas albums!  We had some good friends over for lunch and I just barely got things cleaned and straightened to make things presentable.  Still on my checklist: finishing with the floor trim, waxing the floor, adding curtains, adding a mirrored shadowbox for behind the bar, making some kind of panel backing for the R above the fireplace, restoring my Plycraft chair, and working on getting the other furniture fabrics to match up better (I'm thinking about having new covers made for the Z chairs). But for now, I'm pretty happy with the progress.   Have a look --

I'll probably blog again next weekend, if time allows.

Merry Christmas everyone!

  3. Wow. Your basement is amazing! I see a plastic upside down Y shaped thing that seems to be holding your albums to the wall...where did you get that?! I can't find anything online...

  4. looks fabulous! my grandparents had the same white formica countertops with gold flecks in it. i have end tables that are aqua colored formica with gold fleck because they remind me of the good ol' days of grandma's kitchen. i love your record player too! oh and i have that same color wheel =)

  7. I'm glad you all like the results, thanks everyone!

Rueby - I found those Y-shaped LP holders on eBay - seller is "dsmyser" and I've bought from him a few times over the past several years. They're not super cheap, but quality is good, made in USA, and they're less expensive than the frames you can buy lots of places.

I like them because they're almost invisible. You have to be careful when hanging them - I recommend using a very light weight hammer like an upholsterers hammer because one hole for a nail or long tack is close to an upturned tab that will crack or break if hit by a hammer.

  9. Wow, this is a rumpus room to end all rumpus rooms! Aint nuthin' in this picture that I'm not in love with! The floor turned out great! I cannot believe that those are all Christmas albums. Did you and your friends have a listening party? It makes me want to find my Stevie Wonder and Elvis Christmas albums! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  10. I totally covet this entire room! If it had a cot, a mini-fridge and a hot plate (heck, even just a stick for hot dogs and marshmallows to go in the fireplace!) I'd live down there.

For the record I really dig the fabric on your Z-chairs; they reflect (but don't copy) the zigzag pattern on your floors perfectly.

    Good gracious, this is greatness.

  11. Thanks Bandita and Mod Betty.

Amber, maybe that R above the fireplace should stand for Rumpus

Runaground - there's already a mini fridge tucked in the corner of the room behind the bar. How do you feel about scooping cat litter? We may be able to work something out...

  13. This is fantastic! I just found your blog by accident and love it. I challenged myself to identify all the records on your wall, I think I did pretty well, but there is one I cannot identify. Top row between FLIP and Jose Jiminez, looks like a whiskey jug... I'd love your help, my OCD is kicking in and I've exhausted my resources. I hope you have a really swell Christmas.

    1. Thanks, Deacon, I’m glad you like it. I’m going from memory but aim pretty certain it’s a Hee Haw album - old lower resolution photo isn’t too sharp on my phone screen. Happy Holidays!

  14. Wow, that was quick, my quest begins.

Also in that pic you have a star shaped divided dish, it's spectacular! I'm going to be scouring the shops and internet for one similar.

I love the completeness of your rooms and projects. I'm so glad I found this blog, I'll be reading it all weekend now.

Have a great one! Thanks again.
